The Return Process – How is it recycled?
When you arrive at the Bottle Depot please:
- Obtain a cart.
- Sort your containers on the cart in the following way:

Recycling Aluminum Cans
Separate pop from beer and place them onto flats (flats are supplied by the depot).
Aluminum cans are crushed into biscuits and baled into a large block.Then they’re transported in bales weighing over 20 tons, containing over 1.2 million containers. These bales are sold as a commodity and then melted down and reformed into new aluminum cans. Turn-around for this process is only 60 days from when you return it until it’s back on the store shelf.

Recycling Plastic Bottles
Separate alcoholic from non-alcoholic and 1 liter and under from greater than 1 liter.
Clear plastic beverage containers are baled, shredded and sold as a commodity. Some plastic is then put through a process turning it into a fibre that is used to make fleece jackets like the one pictured here. Most plastic collected is used to make new bottles for things like motor oil.

Recycling Glass Bottles
Glass containers are collected, crushed into pieces and ground back into sand, which is what glass is made of. The sand is then sold for use as mix in sandblasting material or made into fiberglass used to insulate homes.

Recycling Drink Boxes
Collect and group drink boxes of all sizes together for refund.
Around 60% of these polycoated containers are returned for recycling. Once returned, they’re hydra-pulped to separate the paper, plastic and foil. The paper is turned into pulp and put to use again in paper products and as cardboard boxes. Thousands of tonnes of paper pulp are recovered in this process. For every ton of paper pulp recycled, approximately 17 trees are saved.

Recycling Bag in a Box
The plastic in these containers is separated out and can be mixed with other types of plastic to make park benches, bins and other sturdy products.

Recycling Gable Top
Group all gable top container of all sizes together.
Drink boxes and gable top containers go through a hydro-pulping process to separate the materials they’re made of. This material, along with the pulp from the box of a bag in a box are used to make cardboard boxes and industrial paper products.
